Some Tips to Get You Started on Your Bike and Brew Adventure
The Adena Hockhocking Bikeway and local breweries offer something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a great way to have fun with the kids or a convenient way to get to Peden Stadium.
If You’re Biking With the Kids
While all the breweries are kid friendly, Little Fish tops the list. It’s a great place for Mom and Dad to sip a craft beer while the kids drink a Rugrat Ginger Ale. There’s a playground and plenty of ways to keep the youngsters busy. Include a trip to Devil’s Kettle and you’ve found an ideal way to spend a beautiful day.
Pro tip: The Cajun Clucker food cart has a great menu featuring Louisiana specialties, but they also have basics like hamburgers to keep the kids happy.
To Get Some Serious Ride Time
Ride the entire bikeway. It’s about 40 miles roundtrip if you start in Nelsonville, on the western end, or the East State Street Parking Lot, on the eastern end. In between, you can stop to sip beer at one or several of the breweries along the way.
Pro tip: There are several alternative loops you can weave in to avoid backtracking. For instance, after using the bikeway and spur to get to Little Fish, you can use Armitage Road to return to the bikeway instead of backtracking. Armitage is a lightly trafficked road that’s a mix of paved and gravel. it reconnects you to the bikeway just west of the spur for Devil’s Kettle.
To Not Miss Any Beer Events
It’s tough to keep track of all the cool events happening at local breweries and bike shops. Athens Bike and Brew is here to help. Our calendar pulls all the events into a single place so you don’t have to rifle through social media accounts to try to figure out which bottle release, musical act or special event will inspire your bike ride.
Pro tip: Our calendar allows you to export events in a file that can be imported into your Apple or Google calendar. You can do this with individual items or the entire calendar.
For Bobcat Alumni
The bikeway is a great way to get re-acquainted with your alma mater. It winds along the Hocking River and offers multiple points where you can cut off and head for the bricks.
Pro tip: The bikeway is a great way to get to Bobcat sporting events. Peden Stadium, the Convocation Center, Bird Arena and Bob Wren Stadium are all nearby and easy to access. Want to pregame? Start at one of the breweries and cycle to your favorite sport.
