Need to rent a bike? Looking for bike supplies? Or need a quick repair job?
There are several Athens, Ohio, bike shops within striking distance of the bikeway that can help.
We’ve used them all. And like them all. Here are a few details on each.
Address: 4 W. Stimson Ave., Athens (just up the street from Jackie O’s Taproom)
Hours: M-F 10-6, Sat 10-5, closed Sundays.
Athens Bicycle tends to focus on higher-end bikes from a sales perspective. They offer repairs and accessories and also bike rentals. They’re mighty convenient if you need a bike shop on the eastern portion of the bikeway. (And they’ve got a really cool bike mural.)
Cycle Path Bicycles
Address: 104 W. Union Street, Athens
Hours: Mon 10-2, Tues-Sat 10-5:30, closed Sundays.
Cycle Path Bicycles is a great shop if you’re in the market for a decent commuter bike or starter bike. No bike rentals here, but friendly sales and service, and an ample supply of biking accessories. They’re close to the West End Cider House, and down the hill from Jackie O’s Pub and Public House.
Black Diamond Bicycles
Address: 11325 Jackson Drive, The Plains (around the corner from The Eclipse Company Store beer hall)
Phone: 740.797.0880. Hours: Closed Mondays, Tuesday-Friday 11-5:30, Saturday 10-5, Sunday 10-3.
Black Diamond Bicycles is the perfect place to stop if you need sales or service on the western end of the bikeway. They’re across the street from the Eclipse Company Store beer hall. This bike shop also offers bike rentals, and we’ve stopped there more than a few times on our way back from Nelsonville for ice cream or a Gatorade.
The Pedaler & The Packer
Address: 432 Richland Avenue, Athens
Hours: M-Sat 10-5:30, closed Sundays.
The Pedaler & the Packer, — This is more than just a bike shop, featuring gear and instruction for everything from diving to paintball to cycling. To reach them, go across the Richland Avenue Bridge off the bikeway, and watch for their shop on the left about a half-mile up the road. They do offer bike sales, service and accessories.
